Offensive Staff Changes

 With the departure of Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis to Miami, Michigan has holes at the OC and WR coaching positions. Reports are coming out that Harbaugh plans to promote internally to fill those holes. Offensive Line coach Sherron Moore, who coached the Joe Moore award winning unit last season as the top OL in the country, is reported to be getting promoted to Offensive Coordinator duties. The former Oklahoma guard has risen fast in the coaching ranks after starting as a Graduate Assistant at Louisville in 2009. He's never been a play caller, but his success as Michigan's Tight End's coach from 2018-2020 and Offensive Line coach/Co-OC last season has earned him that role for 2022. Not to mention his success on the recruiting trail is invaluable. 

Last season's Quarterback's coach Matt Weiss will add the title of Co-Offensive Coordinator as well according to reports. Weiss is another former member of the Baltimore Ravens staff. He worked for Ravens HC John Harbaugh from 2009 until he was hired last season by Jim Harbaugh to coach the quarterbacks. He is considered a young star in the coaching world, and there is already speculation on how long he'll remain at Michigan before getting job opportunities back in the NFL world. 

Running Backs coach Mike Hart will remain in his position but will also add another title as run game coordinator. Mike Hart was speculated as being the favorite to replace Harbaugh if he were to leave if Michigan were to hire internally. 

Safeties coach Ron Bellamy is expected to move over and coach wide receivers for the Wolverines. Bellamy was a former wide receiver for Michigan from '99 to '02, he was hired to be the Wide Receivers coach in 2021 but was moved over to the defensive side of the ball where his unit excelled. Bellamy is also a shining star on the recruiting trail and a move to the offensive side of the ball could be huge when it comes to Michigan's top WR target Jalen Brown who Bellamy has been recruiting already.

DC - Jesse Minter (New hire from Vandy)
Co-DC/DB - Steve Clinkscale (Internal promotion)
DL - Mike Elston (New hire from ND)
LB - George Helow (Same position as 2021
ST/Safeties - Jay Harbaugh (Added responsibilities of safeties coach)

 Staff turnover is always expected after the type of season that Michigan had in 2021, it happens to every program that has success. Guys get promotions at other Universities, they head for the NFL. This is all fairly normal, business as usual in college football - except. Josh Gattis is headed to Miami to be the offensive coordinator. After interviewing for a head coaching opening at Virginia, Gattis is back in the ACC where he played running back for Wake Forest, in the same role that he had at Michigan. That is the odd part.  Michigan has had multiple departures from the staff this off season. Championship Weekend Preview

 Getting to this a little bit later in the week than I would like, I have been busy revelling in Michigan's absolute undressing of Ohio State. A lot of trash talk to be had, an every morning greeting to Morgan reminding him of his dumpster fire of a team's failures. But alas, I must continue my run of 17-4 on my picks so far (we got a late start but my genius is obviously on full display). It's Conference Championship weekend, playoff positions are on the line, legacies to be cemented and a chance to finally take home the Big Ten title again for the Michigan Wolverines.  Kicking off tonight: Conference USA Championship Western Kentucky vs UTSA - Now I have a lot of love for the WKU Hilltoppers (8-4, 7-1) having attended WKU in 2006 and 2007 before joining the military. UTSA (11-1, 7-1) was having a Cinderella like season before it all came crashing down last weekend when they lost for the first time this season, 42-23 vs North Texas. A Big House Divided

This may seem like an odd topic to discuss for a team that is currently sitting at 8-1 and still has a chance for not only a conference title, but a playoff berth as well. I promise you though, there is some merit here.  The Michigan faithful are, and have been, divided on Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. I will be transparent and say that I never wanted Harbaugh at Michigan. I understood why so many did; his ties to the program and Bo Schembechler, his success at Stanford and San Francisco. To me though, his offensive style was from a by-gone era, one that was better suited for the analytical nature of the NFL. I'm a modern Michigan fan, I believe in the spread offense, I like alternate uniforms, and I don't even care if they change the helmet for a game or two a year. I don't worship at the altar of Bo Schembechler and I believe three yards and a cloud of dust only leads to a lot of punts. Nothing about Harbaugh appealed to me.
